15 Reasons to Grow God’s Gift of Sulforaphane on Your Counter
What do you think of when you want a super-antioxidant? If sulforaphane is not on your radar yet, it will be! You and I have so much opportunity to see how God enriches us each day through His Word and His garden. I am indeed giving thanks always for His grace. The apostle Paul puts it this way:
“I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and knowledge–even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed among you–so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
(1 Corinthians 1:4-7)
I’ve been thinking about these words to the Corinthian church for several weeks now, and it never ceases to amaze me how something new is revealed each time I study it.
He starts the letter with encouragement and assures them they are “enriched in him” in every way.
What does being “enriched in Christ” mean for you and me today?
Do we feel “enriched” in our speech and our knowledge? I hope so!
But as I write this, I’m thinking about the neighbor on the corner enjoying his vacation with loud Halloween music blaring. . . in the middle of the day.
Ok, so, if I’m not lacking in any gift of speech, God will give me the right words to ask him nicely to turn that down a bit, right?” LOL, I have to start somewhere!
But on a deeper spiritual level, our speech towards others and how we say what we mean really matters relationally, I’m looking back at all the times Jesus used his speech to correct another with richness and truth.
For instance:
- The woman at the well felt more than enriched after hearing her past repeated. (John 4)
- The woman caught in adultery didn’t leave defeated and, beat down. (John 8)
- Zacchaeus, who climbed the Sycamore tree, was elevated to the honor of hosting the Messiah (Luke 19)
- Roman soldiers who beat him and bartered for His clothing at the height of His suffering on the cross, were given mercy (Luke 23).
You and I have so much opportunity to see how God enriches us each day through His Word and His garden. I am indeed giving thanks always for His grace.
Did you know He gives us special nutrients to enrich every single cell of our body, too? One particular compound is sulforaphane.

Sulforaphane Benefits:
Sulforaphane is an antioxidant found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts.
But the highest and most beneficial amount is found in broccoli sprouts. This powerhouse of nutrients is so impressive it deserves a top 15 list!
Powerhouse Nutrient Facts of Sulforaphane’s Disease Prevention and Treatment According to PubMed Studies:
- Sulforaphane has been shown to combat various cancers by inhibiting tumor growth and reducing tumor size. (1)
- You and I want better blood glucose control too, don’t we? Yes, we can do this by watching the amount of carbs and sugar we eat, but for those struggling to balance intake it’s nice to know sulforaphane helps improve glucose tolerance in those we love battling prediabetes and obesity (2)
- I can’t help but think of all the people you and I’ve known over the years suffering from Parkinson’s and Alsheimer’s, too. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a God-given substance that helps prevent neurodegenerative diseases like these? Well, we do! Studies are showing promise for these tiny little antioxidant’s power. (3)
- As a nurse health coach, I am always looking for ways to help my clients reduces inflammatory pathways and enhances detoxification. It gives me great delight to find more ways God does this in His gardens around the world!
- Allergy season is upon us and for some of us, that seems to be year-round. Therefore, I am very happy to read this little daily habit supports allergic rhinitis therapies, too.
- Since you and I are affected by the numerous friends and family diagnosed with breast and prostate cancer it’s helpful to know sulforaphane shows promise for early-stage prostate and breast cancer (GSTM1+).
- It protects against diabetic complications; including neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. (1)
- In animal studies it slows retinal photoreceptor cell degeneration. How nice will it be to snip a few sprouts each day to help prevent this common problem?
- We know plenty of parents and grandparents needing cataract surgery, too. A beautiful benefit of sulforaphane is how it protects corneal and lens epithelial cells from oxidative stress and injury. (4)
- It is estimated that 88 to 93% of Americans are battling metabolic disease (Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) which I love to empower people to overcome with the LIFE (Lifestyle, Intake, Frame of Mind, Exercise) approach. Since sulforaphane helps reduces fat-cell fibrosis in animal studies it’s promising for my clients to help prevent obesity-related metabolic problems.
- Now, I know this next one is going to be a mouthful but stick with me. This little antioxidant has been shown to prevent tumor growth through acting as a histone deacetylase inhibitor, a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, and a microRNA regulator of genes involved in developing cancer. Bottom line, it stops the physiological process before it starts.
- Even more mind blowing is how this gift from God provides neuroprotective and cognitive benefits in the brain and is able to cross the blood-brain-barrier to do its scavenging work. This applies to pregnant moms, developing fetuses, and growing children.
- We cannot get away from exhaust fumes, pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals in our air and water. I’m happy to know we have a compound that protects against environmental pollutants that are damaging cells through advanced glycation end products (again, it’s the cellular level damage that leads to disease).
- But it doesn’t stop there! Sulforaphane has been shown to enhance apoptosis (death of cancer cells), cell cycle arrest (stops the mutation) autophagy (the body’s ability to fight disease on its own) and suppresses key signaling pathways such as P13K/ALT/mTOR in breast cancer cells.
- The bladder has frequent attacks on its lining, too! Sulforaphane has been shown to inhibit tumor initiation, modulates the signaling pathway to prevent tumor growth and helps the immune system fight cancer in the bladder.
All in all, this little antioxidant is an enriched gift endowed upon us by our Creator, God. You and I can feel especially loved today through His glorious provision!

How I Grow Sulforaphane
Not only does sulforaphane have many powerful purposes, but it can also be grown on your kitchen counter.
Here’s what I do:
Find a bag of organic sprouting seeds on Amazon:
Find a shallow container that you can put some potting soil in and place it in front of a sunny, well-lit window.
Sew your seeds and water them well. Keep a spray bottle handy to spray them each morning and watch them grow. When they are about 3 inches tall you are ready to harvest!
They have a nice peppery taste, kind of like broccoli, but a little sharper like arugula. You can top your breakfast eggs, quinoa salads, chicken or chickpea salad sandwiches, soups, or you can even eat them plain. They are so good and so good for you!
Call to action:
What helps you feel enriched by Christ, today?
What three areas of “powerful sulforaphane” are you impressed with?
How ready are you, on a scale of 1 to 10, to embrace all the knowledge Christ gives us?
All of it matters to us in our frame of mind, our weight health journey, and our lives. When we take the time to invest in our daily patterns, God really moves in a powerful way.
That’s why I’m always learning!
As always, I am here for you if you need a health coach to walk you through optimizing hormones and becoming who God created you to be physically and spiritually!
